The Wisconsin Black Historical Society & Museum in Milwaukee is UCN’s Share the Plate recipient for May and June 2022. The Society’s founder, Clayborn Benson III, gave UCN’s Sunday sermon on Feb. 6, 2022, and shared with us the passion and the purpose behind his founding of the Society in 1987.
At that time, the historical records and documents of African American history in Wisconsin were widely scattered and poorly preserved. The Museum became an affiliated member of The Wisconsin State Historical Society and for more than 30 years has been documenting and preserving the historical heritage and life stories of people of African descent in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin. When a people know their own history, Mr. Benson told our congregation, they grow to love and appreciate themselves and their culture more. His purpose is to help create a bright future out of a heart-breaking past.
The Museum’s exhibits and collections have become a resource center for all people interested in Wisconsin’s rich African American heritage. The Museum has also developed programs important in the African American community in Milwaukee, including tutoring for children in kindergarten through 12th grades, educational movie series, financial workshops, lecture series, and has become a center for family and community events throughout the year.
The Social Justice Committee plans to take up Mr. Benson’s invitation for UCN to have a group tour of the Museum. No date has been set, but will be announced as soon as possible so that interested members can make the outing to Milwaukee together, and learn more about African American history in Wisconsin.
From in-person services, half the cash offerings will go to the Wisconsin Black Historical Society & Museum in Milwaukee; if you prefer to write a check, please write “Share the Plate” on the memo line and half of your check will be donated.
