The Social Justice Committee is pleased to announce that the organization chosen for “share the plate” for January and February, 2021, is Family Promise, a local organization which arranges for housing for the homeless in Ozaukee County. An urgent need for funds was brought to the Committee’s attention by Pat Kotecki who said ” Family Promise has experienced a huge increase in demand since the beginning of the pandemic.” Safe housing has been secured at the Chalet Motel in Mequon since the member churches of Family Promise, including UCN, can no longer shelter people. The block of 10 motel rooms designated for Family Promise are full with a waiting list of additional families in need.
UCN was instrumental in starting Family Promise and was part of the rotation of churches providing beds and food before the pandemic. Pat also noted that the CDC moratorium on evictions expires on January 1, 2021. We can expect additions to the waiting list for temporary housing at that time. In discussing the Share the Plate nominations, the Social Justice Committee shuffled nominees to provide our donations at the earliest possible time.
