SHARE THE PLATE RECIPIENT FOR MAY AND JUNE, 2023
Our Share the Plate recipient for May and June is the Ozaukee Food Alliance, formerly known as the Saukville Food Pantry. Established in 2012, the food pantry’s outreach has grown from helping 23 families a month to over 750 families per year. The original intent was to meet the needs of any citizen of Ozaukee County that had a food shortage in their home or for emergency food needs, but the offerings have grown to include personal care items, pet food/care items and cleaning products. UCN’s ongoing Food Barrel helps to stock The Ozaukee Food Alliance pantry with shelf-stable foods, but the need is much greater than what our food barrel provides.
Recipients may utilize the “regular” pantry once a month, where they choose shelf-stable foods, such as canned foods, pastas and cereals, as well as fresh bakery, fresh fruits and vegetables, pre-made meals and frozen meats and fish. On weekly mini-pantry days the focus is on the fresh foods and produce. A warm meal is available every other Saturday. The Mobile Pantry goes out once a month. In addition, they provide holiday meal boxes, a Back 2 School Fair and a Back Pack Fridays Program in the Port Washington/Saukville School District.
Moving forward the Ozaukee Food Alliance envisions an increase in services to those in need and continuing to build on the connections within our community to ensure that no one goes hungry or needs to choose between eating and meeting monthly expenses. To better accomplish this goal, they will be moving into their own, larger space and need funds to help cover the cost of purchasing and refitting the building. Ozaukee Food Alliance was honored to be selected as Ozaukee County’s Nonprofit of the Year for 2022.
