Share the Plate Recipient for September and October, 2020
In the months that UCN has been closed due to COVID-19, members and friends have been asked to mail in checks for offertory each week. To continue our work to support other organizations doing important social justice work, we ask you to write “share the plate” on the memo line of your check.
The Social Justice Committee is pleased to announce that the Divine Intervention Program will be our Share the Plate recipient for the months of September and October. Divine Intervention is a program which provides safe sanctuary and basic needs for homeless people. Other services include an overnight prayer vigil/warming room for the winter months, some meals, advocacy, laundry ministry, gardening and Project Home.
Divine Intervention was recommended to the Social Justice Committee as meeting our first two UU principles: the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and justice, equity and compassion in human relations. Members and friends of UCN know we were instrumental in joining with larger local churches to set up the Family Promise of Ozaukee County. Likewise, another small congregation, Tippecanoe Church in Bay View, has organized funding for Divine Intervention and other services for the homeless.
All of us are aware of non-profit organizations that are doing important work in addressing the significant social problems we face here in southeastern Wisconsin and beyond. The Social Justice Committee is pleased to announce that Lotus Legal is our Share the Plate recipient for the months of July and August. Lotus Legal is a non-profit legal clinic which provides free legal council to survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking regardless of income.
The mission of Lotus Legal is to empower survivors of sexual violence and trafficking by providing direct, comprehensive legal service, advocacy and community education. The goal of their policy initiatives is to create systemic changes in laws and judicial systems to improve the lives of those survivors. Lotus Legal was nominated for Share the Plate in anticipation of the Democratic National Convention which was scheduled for Milwaukee later this summer. Due to COVID-19, the Convention has been changed to a virtual format. Though the anticipated volume of sex trafficking is lower at this point, this everyday illegal activity goes on.

Share the Plate Update for May and June, 2020
In the months that UCN has been closed due to COVID-19, members and friends have been asked to mail in checks for offertory each week. To continue our work to support other organizations doing important social justice work, we ask you to write “share the plate” on the memo line of your check. The organization approved by the Social Justice Committee for May is Kids Matter Inc. Founded in 2000, Kids Matter Inc. was inspired by the compelling need to improve the lives of the many Milwaukee County children involved in the child welfare system. The mission of Kids Matter is to help abused and neglected children heal and thrive, to bring volunteer energy and community support to foster and kinship children and to apply lessons learned to prevent further child abuse.
